I've Misjudged you Tik Tok!

I know what you're thinking... I was thinking exactly the same thing whenever I heard the words Tik Tok.  The majority of what I had seen from this platform in the past was young kids doing silly things. Not that I'm against this per se, but I didn't see how I would fit in on this venue.  I am "that girl" who refuses to engage in group dances, resists anything that the "crowd" is doing...  Simply put, this introvert is just not a joiner.   Add to that my complete fear of being on film and I just didn't bother to investigate the platform.

Recently, however, I have seen more and more content being shared of things I find interesting: Recipes, how-to videos, music, and oh-my-goodness HISTORY and TOURS.  So I decided to check it out.

I downloaded the app and started scrolling.

I laughed, I cried, I learned a LOT, and then... I stumbled onto some videos authored by my peers in metal detecting community.  A lightbulb flicked on...

"I can do this!" I thought to myself.

Next thing you know, I've got an account and have uploaded my first video.  It was a simple trailer introducing my YouTube channel, which immediately began receiving views.

"What? How did that happen?"

I began uploading snippets of my old videos, creating a catalog of sorts of my best moments and finds.  I was thinking of it as a marketing tool to filter traffic to my YouTube content. But as I posted each new video and continued to receive unsolicited views, I became intrigued.  I didn't share the links with anyone. I had not posted them to my Facebook page.  Yet people were viewing my content... With no promotion at all!

"Interesting..."

While I pondered this whole thing, it occurred to me, there are huge differences inherent in YouTube and Tik Tok which represents their vastly differing audiences. (It's also evidence of the worlds diminishing attention span, but we wont go there).  Tik Tok viewers' habits are geared toward 1-3 minute videos.  They just don't want to invest the 10-15 minutes, which has become the YouTube standard.  And yet, Tik Tok viewers will not hesitate to spend well past 10-15 minutes watching your catalog of videos if they are enjoying the content.

That in mind, I continued to post on Tik Tok, and even started expanding my horizons by creating clips during my adventures and metal detecting.  The more I engaged the more views I was getting, and surprisingly, I was acquiring followers!  Real, organic subscribers who watched my videos, liked what I was putting out there, and decided they wanted to see more! This, to me, as an artist, was compelling.  I began looking at Tik Tok as a completely new creature with a whole new viewer base.   An audience who wasn't concerned with video quality and production, which means, I can interact on a more regular basis, even DAILY!

Youtube videos are so much work, and I love doing them, but they are time consuming.  There is no way I could do a daily video on YouTube, at least not the way I do them.  Tik Tok on the other hand is fast, no editing, instant short snip (3 minutes or less) for viewers who are more concerned with the content and an honest interaction than they are hours of effects, transitions, and audio engineering.  It's like speed dating!  Only I'm not looking for a mate, I'm just looking to share my love for adventure, the outdoors, metal detecting, camping, music, wine, or whatever else strikes my fancy, with people who are genuinely interested.

I really think I'm going to like this tikky tok thing!  :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xbrn5PtIi5M

We danced, we sang, we battled zombies, we dug some incredible finds, and we had some truly unforgettable times! These past five years have been filled with laughter and tears, and the best detecting partners anyone could hope for. Thanks to those who have subbed on Youtube and watch the videos. They are a labor of love which are often weeks, even months in the making. I am so thankful to have the memories captured and finds recorded, and equally grateful for those who have supported me and the channel. FIVE YEARS have flown by! I cannot express how much I appreciate each and every one of you for taking this journey with me! I hope you will stick around to see what the next five years bring!  You guys really do ROCK metal detecting. To recap the adventures we've put together a fast and furious flash back through last five years of Girls Rock Metal Detecting. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did putting it together!  xoxo Siren Kimmie

The AMAZING Yeti

This morning, while exiting the truck, my prized Yeti coffee cup slipped out of my hands.  It crashed mercilessly to the ground before rolling to a stop by the front passenger tire.  I sprung into action, attempting to rescue my precious brew as it glug-glug-gluged on to the asphalt.

"NOOOOOOO not my Yeti!!!" I exclaimed before plucking it up along with the plastic slider lock that was resting a few inches away.

"Maybe I can fix it," I thought to myself doubtfully.

I tossed the lid into my purse, resigning myself to the fact that I would soon be faced with a pricey replacement.  Once settled into my office I attempted a thorough investigation of the damage.  As I set the lock into it's proper position something magical happened...  It snapped into place!

"What in the world?"

I  pulled the slider off and watched in wide wonder as it once again snapped back into position.

"It's MAGNETIC!"  I exclaimed, with probably too much excitement.

"How cool is that!?"

I must have washed that the thing a thousand times or more, always struggling to clean under that lock... and this WHOLE TIME I had NO IDEA it was magnetic!

You know, sometimes it really is the small things...

New Year, New Decade, New Way!

Welcome to the 2020s!  As we begin a new decade, I want to share something which may sound a little rah-rah, and "common sense-y," but in addition to holding myself accountable, I think it may actually be of benefit to others---not just in detecting, but in the game of life.

Truth is, I am not big on the whole "New Years Resolution" thing.  Most of us greet January 1st with an exhale and a feeling of relief that we survived the previous year, all the while glancing hopefully toward the future. Having a goal is great, but adding pressure because "everyone else is making resolutions," can really be deflating.  Instead, I have decided to look at the new year and this next decade as a "reboot".

That's right.  Another ten years wiser (hopefully), I have come to realize that having no structure in place for achieving goals is a guaranteed fail. (Duh!) Whether it's building up the courage to door knock, learning how to create YouTube videos, or even something personal like eating healthy, or finding a new job; instead of scheduling it for New Year's Day (which many have undoubtedly done), let's use this as a clean slate--a time to start fresh and take control instead of simply reacting defensively to things as they happen.

Below are a few tips which may help in creating the perfect offensive plan:
  1. Identify your goals and WHY you want to achieve them.  (Incidentally if you are attempting to achieve a goal for someone else, you're probably going to fail.  You have to want it for yourself!)
  2. Identify what DOESN'T work.  What have you done in the past that has failed.  Yeah, don't do that again.  Looking at past patterns. You may find that you've been repeating the same behavior over and over expecting different results (That whole "insanity" thing).
  3. Have a contingency plan.  What happens if things do not work out as intended. Obstacles are constantly being throw in our way.  What type of snags are you likely to encounter and how can you work around them?
  4. Get out of your own way.  While identifying your goals, you may realize you are trudging along the same path you've gone down before (see step 2).  Be willing to take a small step back or at least in another direction, to avoid repeating the same mistakes.
  5. Develop a plan and work it!  Don't just say you are going to do something and wait for it to happen; as if shouting your words into the ether will propel you forward. Set a schedule, do something that inspires you, whatever it is that keeps you focused. Work your plan every day.
  6. Set small goals.  Taking baby steps and celebrating small achievements builds confidence, increases will power, and snowballs into success.
So there it is!  I hope these tips will help guide you to unspeakable treasures!

Nokta Makro Simplex+: Separating Fact from Fiction

From the moment Nokta Makro hinted at the manufacture of the Simplex+, detectorists were instantly a buzz.  And rightfully so.  A fully waterproof, wireless, lightweight machine, packed with advanced features;  boasting great depth and separation at an affordable price?  It sounds too good to be true!

Aside from offering a new option to the entry level detectorists, the Simplex+ has struck fear in the hearts of those who stand to lose a big chunk of the beginner market. Beyond that, the Simplex+ has been performing so well, some individuals have felt compelled to compare it to machines high above its price range. And amazingly the Simplex+ has proved impressive.

Enter the trolls:  Just as quickly as the excitement started to build, so did the attacks and rumors from individuals who had never so much as laid eyes (let alone hands) on a Simplex+.  Some short, but necessary delays added fuel to the fire as these naysayers jumped at any chance to sabotage Simplex+ sales.  Yet, inspite of saboteurs' misleading with improperly set up machines in comparison tests, concocting conspiracy theories, and spreading flat out lies, the Simplex+ stands tall in the crowd. The rumors of a Simplex+ death have been greatly exaggerated (in other words... FALSE!)

So you have to ask - when someone is actively attacking the machine, is it opinion, or do they have an agenda.  Clearly Nokta Makro has an agenda; to put out a superior entry level machine which taps into the lucrative beginner detectorist market. And for consumers this is a GOOD THING. It will force all manufacturers to hit the drawing board and come up with competing machines, resulting in more inexpensive options for detectorists; not to mention breeding advancement in technology.

Meanwhile the Simplex+ has been finding its way into the hands of many well pleased consumers who have given unbiased and very positive feedback.

The Simplex+ is here to stay and is shaking up the metal detecting world...for the better!
